Cultivating The Attitude Of Gratitude

Are you someone who struggles with seeing the positive things in life? Or perhaps you tend to live in fear and scarcity. Learning how to cultivate an attitude of gratitude can turn around even the darkest of days.


First, let's talk about what gratitude is.

Gratitude is the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return to kindness. Author, Melody Beattie says, "gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, and confusion into clarity." In a nutshell, an attitude of gratitude means giving thanks for everything in life- even when nothing seems as if it is going right.


Studies have shown that when we focus on all the things that we do have versus what we don't, it raises our happiness by 25%. When we experience more joy, our emotional and mental health becomes more sturdy, our immune system becomes stronger, we sleep better, risk for cardiovascular disease lowers, and our diet improves. Our relationship with God also increases. God wants us to feel grateful for all the things we do have and trust that we will always be provided for. When we question if we will have enough, we are questioning God's power and love for us. When we focus on gratitude, we are focused on God's grace.


In order to live a life seeing the glass half full versus half empty takes work- but do not worry, eventually it will become a habit, our new normal. Our brains are naturally programmed to look for the negative and unfortunately, heavy/painful events are what impacts our minds the most. We need to literally reprogram the mind by breaking the neural pathways within the brain and create new circuits. These old pathways keep us stuck in the same habits and thoughts, in fact the majority of the thoughts we have today are recurring thoughts from days prior. So we need to take our life into our own hands and instead of living through the same motions day in and day out, we choose a different path.


Here are a few ways to begin to cultivate the attitude of gratitude and transform your life:


  1. Pray

Get into the habit of speaking directly with God to feel His unwavering love for you. The more you speak with Him, the more you know Him. Express gratitude for everything you have in your life and feel how He continues to add to it. Once I began to open my heart to God and know Him, I learned how much I am truly provided for- my heart was able to explode in gratitude.


2. Gratitude Journal

Every day sit down and write out everything that you are grateful for. Take your time to really feel this instead of it becoming just another list or thing to-do. In the moments that you can't think of anything, remember the abundance of oxygen, the outdoors, etc. - there is always something to be grateful for.


3. Celebrate!

Celebrate the big and small victories. The gift of enjoying another day is more than enough reason to celebrate!


4. Share

Let others in your life know how much you appreciate them


5. Move and meditate

Move your body and find stillness reflecting on the feeling of gratitude.
